From the Pastor:
As an encouragement to families with young children, we decided to put “Celebrating Children at Westminster” cards in the pew racks. We want to be welcoming, reminding us all:
Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome!
Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship.
I took this picture on Friday afternoon and posted it on our Facebook page. Since then, it has gone viral. As of Tuesday at lunchtime, more than 170,000 have seen it (FB gives us the stats), and it has spread around the country and around the world. Amazing.
I generally don’t pay much attention to what is popular on Facebook (after all, this kitten praying is more popular than our post), but I do think there are some lessons to be learned.
From the popularity and comments on our post, I’m reminded of two things. First, church can be stressful for young families. We probably underestimate that fact- how the worship experience for moms and dads with young children can be unpleasant. No wonder many are staying home on Sundays. The second consistent response I’ve noticed is relief. People are writing about how wonderful it is to see a church make such a bold statement about welcoming children. Apparently that is not the case in all churches!
I’m so glad to be the pastor of a church that loves and welcomes children. Praise God for our kids, their parents, and the church that welcomes them!
See you Sunday,
