Westminster Presbyterian Church is part of Charleston Atlantic Presbytery – a group of Presbyterian churches covering area from McClellanville out to Orangeburg and down to Hilton Head. Today, Pastors and Elders from the Presbytery gathered at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Walterboro for a quarterly meeting. It was good meeting as we worshiped together, shared The Lord’s Supper, shared joys and concerns from our churches, and enjoyed a fellowship meal. I’d like to share two thoughts from the day with you.
First, I love the diversity of our Presbytery. I look around the room and see young and old, black and white, urban and rural, cutting edge and old guard. When we were at the Lord’s Table, the worship leader (Rev. Cameron Smith- who grew up at WPC) said we were participating in a foretaste of what we will one day experience in glory. I’m so encouraged by that thought- all of us brought together through Jesus.
Second, and more personally, the Bethel Church was where I stood before the Presbytery almost 20 years ago to be examined as a candidate for ministry. I was scared to death! I passed the exam, and immediately after the affirmative vote, then Executive Presbyter Barry VanDeventer stood and led the body in singing the Doxology (Praise God from whom all blessings flow…) For me it has become a core memory. I experienced God’s blessing through the Presbytery that day, and I gave thanks today as I remembered his faithfulness to me then and in the years since then.
Friends, that’s the church being the church! Thanks be to God!
