But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may exult in you.
For you bless the righteous, O LORD;
you cover him with favor as with a shield. Psalm 5:11-12
In a world of headlines dominated by what we should fear, the words of Psalm 5 resonate, don’t they? The idea of God spreading his protection over us is comforting. The thought of being covered by God’s favor as with a shield may calm our worried hearts. We sure do like the idea that God responds to our prayers for safety and protection.
However, as we pray for refuge for ourselves or others, it is important to know “the rest of the story” as Paul Harvey used to say.
WHEN GOD CREATES A SAFE PLACE FOR US, IT IS FOR A REASON!
Look again at the psalm. The ones who take refuge “ever sing for joy.” The ones who have protection are called to “exult in you.” Do you see it? The priviledge of God’s hand on our lives comes with the responsibility of response. When God protects, it shapes the heart so we cannot help but respond with joy.
Consider the ways God has and is covering your life, and sing for joy!
